This was a variant of the A28 being built between February and April 1935. The most obvious difference being the A30's 9 foot Collett bogies. However, the position of the roof vents, type of doors and windows plus a host of other small details make the two prototypes quite different. Internally the A28 and A30 had an identical floor plan. Like the A28's, the A30's saw service all over the G.W.R. system. All the A30's had been withdrawn by 1961.

Both the A28 and A30 were built with windows in the trailing end. We refer to this as the "early" type. Around the end of 1935 both the A28 and A30 had the windows in the trailing end painted black. At a later, unrecorded date the windows in both the A28 and A30 were panelled over. This was because lumps of coal kept falling off the bunker of Autotanks and breaking the windows. We refer to the panelled over version as the "later" type. An example of the A30 have been preserved.
