GWR / BR 4575 / 55xx Prairie Tank

Following on from the very popular Dapol / Lionheart 45xx at Kettering show Dapol announced the production of the 4575 / 55xx series Small Prairie.

They were designed as small mixed traffic branch locomotives, mainly used on branch lines. They were a development of Churchward's 4500 Class with larger side tanks and increased water capacity.100 were built between 1927-1929 at the GWR Swindon Works and were numbered 4575-4599 and 5500-5574. Fifteen locomotives were fitted with auto apparatus in 1953 to enable them to run push-pull trains on South Wales lines with auto trailers.

They are often referred to as Small Prairie Class tank locomotives. A total of Eleven members of the class have made it into preservation.

These images are the very first test sample images released by Dapol and are for illustration only. At this stage we have not been given any indication as to release date but we would imagine it will be 2024. We are taking advance orders for these now for despatch as soon as they become available.

I have also asked for some further clarification on some of the versions. I could guess what the differences are have asked for confirmation from Dapol.

These models will have an identical specification as the previous Lionheart versions and will feature:

  • Die cast metal chassis and cylinders with working vacuum pump,
  • Die cast wheels with steel tyres
  • Brake shoes in ABS plastic
  • Two styles of sand boxes in ABS
  • 5 pole skew wound precision motor
  • Sprung driving wheel and pony trucks, live bearing pickups
  • Front and rear pony wheel trucks to operate on a cam system to allow the model to traverse R2 (40.5"radius) curves
  • Die cast pivoted coupling and connecting rods.
  • Two versions of smokebox door (one with fixings for B.R. number plate)
  • The cab roof to be easily removed (for adding a crew) by means of small magnets
  • Working cab doors in metal
  • Chimney, short and tall safety valve casings and whistles to be turned metal parts
  • Wire handrails with stanchions in metal
  • Sprung metal buffers and screw link couplings
  • Full backhead detail with reversing lever in ABS
  • Coal load in bunker and flickering firebox glow

These images are the very first test sample images released by Dapol and are for illustration only. At this stage the earliest indication of a release for these is Spring 2024.

They are only provisional and may be subject to change dependant upon any unexpected price rises from the factory in China or any major fluctuation in the exchange rates.
