Ready to Run Locomotives |
.The Y1/Y3 Sentinel was based on the road going lorry. Whilst not having the greatest turn of speed (Approximately 36mph top speed) these small locomotives proved capable of pulling a constant draw weight and were considered ideal for shunting in yards and providing motive power on smaller branch lines. These quirky little locomotive were used by all of the big four but it was the LNER that used and ordered the greatest number. Many Y1's and Y3's were produced and continued to provide service until their phased withdrawal during the 1940's and 1950's. Seven survided into the 1960's in departmental stock, only two survived into preservation. The first production run of these has been very popular and Dapol have announced a re-run of these which is expected either very late 2024 or early 2025. We are taking advance orders for the new releases now for despatch as soon as they become available. |
Y1 / Y3 Sentinel HistoryThe LNER Class Y1 was a class of 0-4-0 geared steam locomotives originally built by Sentinel Wagon Works for the London and North Eastern Railway and introduced in 1925. They passed into British Railways ownership in 1948 and were numbered 68130-68153 but 68134 was withdrawn almost immediately and may not have carried its BR number. The LNER Class Y3 was a class of 0-4-0 geared steam locomotives originally built by Sentinel Wagon Works for the London and North Eastern Railway and introduced in 1927. They passed into ownership in 1948 and were numbered 68154-68185. At least one was based at Immingham in 1950. This long lived little loco was seen in LNER, LMS, GWR and BR service and later on some ended up in private ownership. The superheated vertical water-tube boiler and the engine were similar to those used in Sentinel steam wagons. There were variations within the class as regards boiler size and fuel capacity. The engines had poppet valves and reversing was by sliding camshaft. The advantage of the water-tube boiler was that steam could be raised much more quickly than with a conventional fire-tube boiler. The Dapol O gauge Y1 / Y3 will have the following features:
As a breakdown of the costs for our overseas customers the cost of the basic version of the Y1 / Y3 is as follows:: Overseas: 1 x Y1/Y3 £165.00
