Mk2 / 2a Coaches

The F.K. (First Corridor) was the first of the MK2 coaches produced and the first were early enough to enter service in both BR Maroon and Southern Region Green livery. These were often seen mixed in with rakes of Mk1s in respective liveries or even still in the older colours alongside the blue grey livery which started to appear in 1966. Tower Models are producing the BR maroon livery of the FK as a Limited Edition of just 75 units and advance ordering is highly recommended. Initially the BR Mk 2 maroon F.K.'s were allocated to the Eastern (18 units) and Midland regions (29 units)in 1964 with a total of 70 MK2's being built, 20 of these were completed in BR Southern Green.

The Mk 2 coaches were the second of the BR designed coaching stock and the Mk2 / 2a were produced between 1964 and 1968, later variant of the coaches were produced up until 1975.

All four models feature superb interior and exterior detail and innovative design, allowing modellers to customise their vehicles to suit their exact requirements. Customer-fit underframe parts and end gangway doors will enable the models to be completed as vacuum-braked Mk2 or air-braked Mk2a vehicles (instruction sheets will provide guidance on which parts are required for each type, where to fit them and which liveries they carried).

Other standard features on the new HELJAN Mk2/Mk2a coaches include highly detailed interiors with separate seats, luggage racks, tables and guards van/office details, a wealth of separate roof, end and underframe detail and our superb new B4 bogies.

To make further interior detailing/painting easier, the models will feature removable roofs secured in place with magnets.

There is also going to be the option to install interior lighting will also be extremely simple thanks to Heljan's new battery-powered LED lighting bar which will simply drop into the locating slots provided on the interior unit. Featuring a built-in motion sensor, the lights switch on when any movement is detected and remain illuminated for two minutes when your train is stationary.

Using standard coin batteries, these lighting bars provide an economical ‘fit-and-forget’ solution without the extra expense of DCC decoders or the additional weight and friction that can cause issues with some lighting/pick-up systems.

These lighting units are in production now and should be available soon and should easily be adapted to other coaching stock.

The first test samples have now been approved and we should see decorated samples during the spring. Release date is expected June or July 2024 and we are taking advance orders for these for despatch as soon as they become available.
